Florida State Rep. Jason Brodeur Proposing Used Tire Aging Bill

Despite several efforts in multiple states in recent years, legislators have been unable to establish laws that would require tire manufacturers and retailers to provide consumers with a tire’s age upon sale. Many automobile manufacturers currently suggest that tires should be replaced after six years of use; however, tire companies have opposed such legislation. Additionally, a potentially greater problem exists in the used tire retail industry, as new tires are generally safer and experience fewer cases of tread separation than used tires.

Kuhmo Tires Announces Recall Due To Sidewall Cracking, Air Loss

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today that Kuhmo Tire USA Inc. has voluntarily recalled at least 1,238 tires after it was discovered that specific models were experiencing air loss during vehicle operation. According to the NHTSA, the affected tire line and model are the KUMHO SOLUS KH25/225/45R17, which were manufactured and produced between August 21, 2011 and June 23, 2012. It is believed that only 122 of the tires have actually been sold.

Michelin Recalls 841k Tires – Tread Separations

On July 24, Michelin North America Inc. announced the voluntary recall of more than 841,000 tires – BF Goodrich Commercial T/A A/S and Uniroyal Laredo HD/H models for commercial light trucks – because of a defect that can lead to tread separation and loss. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at least 799,900 of the tires involved in this recall were sold in the United States.

Last Friday, April 20, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) acknowledged the voluntary recall of 77,775 Michelin bus tires due to a “casing that may experience a loss of integrity and, in some cases, have rapid air loss.”  This rapid tire air loss, also known as a blowout, increases the risk of a loss of vehicle control and crash.

Over 12,000 Light Truck Tires Recalled Due to Potential Failure and Crash Risk

Late last week GTC North America, Inc. and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall of 12,289 Advance Extra Grip AR215 light truck tires.  “Light truck” refers to any motor vehicle with a combined curb and payload weight of 8,500 pounds or less and includes pickup trucks, vans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles.

Toyo Tires Recalled Over Defect that May Lead to Failure and Crashes

Today Toyo Tires U.S.A. Corp announced a safety recall for approximately 68,763 Toyo Extensa A/S tires. This recall affects only specific tires in the Extensa line that are size P225/60R16 and marked “Made in the USA" on the sidewall.

These defective tires were produced in Toyo’s Georgia manufacturing plant and are further identified by the last four digits of the Tire Identification Number (TIN), which ranges from 3890 to 4410. They were manufactured from September 29, 2009 to November 6, 2010.
